More on the Warren House Series

Hard to believe that it has been almost 20 years since I originally took these photos (in 2007). Old abandoned houses, especially those I’ve randomly come across while driving, are so fascinating to me. They always feel as if they have a story to tell and you never know how much longer they will be around.

In the case of this house, it has been gone for many years now. Understandable in many ways given the location. It was right off US Route 50 as you come into Ocean City, across from Crabs to Go (my favorite crab take-out) and a gas station and right before the Home Depot and Walmart retail area which has been constantly growing and expanding during this time. Even 20 years ago, there were no other houses nearby (you can read a little more of what I learned from a chance encounter when I originally took the photos).

At the time, I edited a few of the photos, planning on coming back to the rest later. Of course, now those edits feel a bit heavy handed and I got a kick out of remembering how I wrestled with figuring out how to make a “web” version of the photos at a much lower resolution so that the photos (and webpage) would not take forever to load.

These are some of my favorite photos and I can’t believe that it has taken me this long to do them justice. I won’t say that I am overly skilled at editing—I mostly just play around with the more basic sliders in Lightroom until I get something that I generally like. I lean towards higher contrast and more color saturated photos but anything more technical than that and I am lost.

Series 1 focuses on the main house—a delightful two-story wood shingled house (so much texture!) with an amazing front porch covered in vining plants.

Series 2 focuses on the outbuildings (there were at least 6)—a majority of which were originally painted red and have aged to be wonderfully chippy and colorful.
