Encouraging Late/Reluctant Readers
Monday, August 17, 2009 at 10:37AM Back in May, I presented a new talk at the VaHomeschoolers Conference, “Encouraging Reading in Late and Reluctant Readers,” based on an article that I wrote for the VaHomeschoolers Voice.
In preparing for the talk, I searched out some links to provide additional support for allowing your child to come to reading on his or her own timetable (something especially important if you have a right brained learner whose “normal” timetable is different from what is traditionally expected in school.) Some of these links will be familiar to those who read this blog, but a few are new so I decided to post them here too.

- Will They Ever Read? By Carol Narigon

Hope that these articles provide you support and information as you help your “late” or “reluctant” reader on his or her journey to reading!

I'm duty-bound to mention this wonderful resource to you: Read Right System is breaking all records for helping children to overcome reading problems. This system, developed by Dr. Dee Tadlock and described in detail in her book, Read Right! (McGraw-Hill) has been adopted by hundreds of schools with superb results. There is also a phone tutoring option. My granddaughter (age 11) has had about 9 hours of Read Right phone tutoring and is making rapid progress. When she "achieves excellence" in reading a passage, her face lights up in the most beautiful way! For more information, go to www.ReadRight.com.
Ahhh, just what I needed as we enter our homeschool year in a couple of weeks! Thanks!
I found this post through Jen's Book Page, and I love the articles!
If parents model a love of reading, and start reading enthusiastically with their children from an early age (preferably birth), the process of learning to read and seeking out books will come more naturally later on.
Thank you!
As a Mother of two reluctant readers, I must say that this book has helped my two boys create an amazing interest in reading. “HELLS AQUARIUM” by Steve Alten, about the giant prehistoric shark Megalodon. Thanks to this book, my kids now read at will. http://www.amazon.com/Meg-Hells-Aquarium-Steve-Alten/dp/1935142046
