Bunnicula - Mini-Review

Bunnicula: A Rabbit Tale of Mystery by James Howe

A great series authored by the family dog, Harold. Really funny story about how Bunnicula comes to live with the family (he is found in the movie theater during a showing of Dracula). The family cat, Chester, becomes convinced that Bunnicula is really a vampire bunny because he sleeps during the day and vegetables are mysteriously sucked dry of all their juices during the night. Ahh...the horror!

Lovable, funny characters and one of the funniest scenes ever in children’s literature (when Chester tries to take out Bunnicula with a steak (instead of a stake)). I especially love the relationship between Harold and Chester (and in later books the addition of the adorable daschund puppy, Howie). They get on each others nerves at times, but there is a strong affection there that is so sweet to read about.

I read this series first with Jason when he was around 5 or 6 and loved it. And enjoyed it even more the second time around last year with Kyle when he was 7 (and more often than not, Jason wound up joining us to re-listen as well). If you have child who is an animal lover or one who appreciates good writing, strong, endearing characters and lots of laugh-out-loud humor, this is the book for you.

Other books in the series: Howliday Inn, The Celery Stalks at Midnight, Bunnicula Strikes Again, Bunnicula Meets Edgar Allen Crow.

Oh, and you can read more about James Howe if you are interested. I love knowing a little bit about the author of the books that we love. Adds another dimension to our reading.

Bunnicula is my daughter's favorite series (she just turned 8). She started reading last November, and the Bunnicula early readers are one of the only things she enjoys reading by herself. The titles of the early readers are Scared Silly, Hot Fudge, The Fright Before Christmas... I think there are 6 of them. And I've read her the main books 4 or 5 times each.

I love the books for the humor and vocabulary and because Howe did not write "down" to kids. My daughter also spends a surprising amount of time analyzing everything. Recently she decided that Chester had never *truly* hated Bunnicula, because Chester is too smart to confuse steak and stake, so he wasn't really trying to harm Bunnicula. It was just an act.

Also she wants James Howe to write a book where for once Chester is correct! I guess we'll have to send him a letter.
